Boca Raton gets its name from boca de ratones, a Spanish term meaning “rat’s mouth” that appeared on early maps and referred to hidden sharp-pointed rocks that gnawed at ships’ cables. Japanese farmers arrived and started the Yamato Colony in the area, and the architect Addison Mizner began designing a luxury resort city.
Now Boca Raton is known as a vacation and second home destination. Now, home to many golf courses, parks and beaches. Large, oceanfront Red Reef Park is home to the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center with trails, a butterfly garden and a sea turtle sanctuary. Visit the Boca Raton Museum of Art for modern and contemporary exhibits.
The bustling Mizner Park offers interesting shops and great nightlife, including concerts at the Countess De Hoernle Theater. Enjoy shopping at Boca Town Center, where you'll find there's something for everyone!
