Property taxes can vary and it's important to know what to expect. Whether you decide to make Florida your homestead or not, your taxes will be different either way. So it's good to know your numbers!
If you decide to make Florida your homestead, you will receive a $25,000 tax exemption and a cap on your property taxes of 3% every year. If not, the cap is 10% on how much your taxes can go up each year. You MUST close on your home by December 31 to qualify for the homestead exemption for the following year, and you MUST file by February 28.
To homestead your property you should be prepared to change your ID to your Florida address, register you car in Florida and have your bills changed to the new address as well. To qualify you MUST live in your Florida home for at least 6 months and 1 day.
